Event details:

A live online workshop exploring understanding and supporting sensory processing and why this is relevant for mental health, delivered by a multiply neurodivergent occupational therapist.

Aim: To introduce you to sensory processing and how it relates to mental health, giving you some tools for what to look out for, what you can do differently and when to refer on.

We will cover:

  • Sensory modulation and mental health

  • Sensory processing patterns - seeking, avoiding, sensitivity, low registration

  • The 8 sensory systems and strategies for each

  • What to look out for and how you can support

  • Resources and tools: Window of tolerance, sensory ladders, sensory kits, DBT crisis survival skills, anti-dissociative skills

I will use as many practical examples as possible with the aim of you having things you can use in practice or in your own life.

This is a big and complex area of practice and you are not expected to know everything about sensory processing. This is to give you a base understanding of some things to look for and some ideas for strategies. Future presentations will look at diving deeper into some of these areas.

T‌he content was created with health professionals in mind, but is relevant for teachers, people wanting to learn more for themselves, or anything really!

 ‌Cost (New Zealand $):

  • $150 full (suggested for those who are working)

  • $90 concession (reduced fee for those who need it)

Session Times:

  • Friday 7th December 12-2pm NZDT

  • Friday 13th December 12-2pm NZDT

What you get

  • 4 hours of live online content + recording

  • A resource folder with the slides, workshop activities, additional resources and references

  • A chance to connect with others, reflect and learn more about your own sensory processing and how to support yourself and/or others

Supporting each other:

  • You may need something to write with and something to write on, as well as other supports for yourself e.g. water, snacks, fidgets, a footstool etc.

  • You are welcome to do things that support your learning, e.g. use fidgets, move around, keep your camera off etc.

  • If you don’t want to ask a question out loud, please use the chat box. I will have a support person to monitor the chat box for me so I can stay focused on presenting.

  • To support my focus please keep your microphone muted during the presentation. I will stop for questions and a break halfway through, you are welcome to unmute then or use the chat box. If you feel comfortable having your camera on, I find it useful to have the real time feedback of people's faces.

  • Please respect different people’s lived experience and identities. Everyone will be at a different point in their learning.

  • The handout is located in the Google drive of resources. Please do not copy, share or re-sell workshop materials created by me. Many of the additional resources in the Google drive are freely available and can be shared.

  • The presentation will be recorded and a link to the recording sent out to you after the live sessions.

  • There will be some practical activities that ask you to reflect and try out some tools. We may try some breakout room discussions depending on timing. It is ok to not join a breakout room.

  • Please maintain confidentiality and respect privacy when sharing examples and do not use any identifying details.

  • If you are no longer able to attend please let me know with as much notice as possible. Refunds are possible if notice is given 48 hours before the event. If you receive a refund you will not get access to the recording.
